Cultimate Foods raises €2.3 million seed funding from leading biotech and food-tech investors

Plus, France's Edonia launches microalgae-powered proteins, Nurasa opens innovation center, and dogs in for a microbial treat

We’re still suffering with jet lag following the successful launch of The Future of Protein Production in Chicago last week, but we just had to bring you some standout stories that caught our eye while in the USA!

We were especially pleased to see a €2.3 million seed round for a friend of the platform, which will use the funding to scale up production processes, expand commercial collaborations and operations. The Berlin-based company, featured in the Q2 2024 edition of Protein Production Technology International, creates a game-changing alternative fat ingredient to bring the authentic meaty experience to plant-based products.

As our cover story last October showed, pets are a problem. We love ‘em but feeding them is a climate catastrophe. That’s why we’re intrigued by two developments in the pet food market: two companies have teamed up to launch the world’s first microbial protein dog treat, while another two entered into partnership to develop ingredients through precision fermentation. If US pets alone were their own country, they would be the fifth-largest meat consumers in the world, and responsible for up to 30% of associated carbon emissions. So developments such as these are most welcome!

Meanwhile, two Swiss companies are celebrating after launching meat substitutes based on spent grains in the Migros and Volg supermarkets. The raw material is a by-product of the beer brewing process and was previously used as animal feed.

And a new collaboration announced in the USA is set to enhance the Omega-3 oil landscape, accelerating the launch and commercialization of new, sustainable alternatives to fish oil, in this instance based on microalgae!

We’ll be back in full swing with bringing you news now that we have returned to home soil, so keep an eye on the website and our LinkedIn page for more updates over the next seven days! See you next week!
